Surf Simply is excited to announce our 10-day satellite coaching course during September 12-22, 2016, for level 3 and 4 surfers, in the beautiful and wave rich Mentawai Islands off the east coast of Sumatra, in Indonesia.
Coming along will be our Head Coach, Jessie Carnes, Coaching Director, Harry Knight, and everyone’s favourite cross-stepping, podcasting Surf Simply coach, Asher King.
The waves in the area will be predominantly reef breaks, with a different set of coaching advantages than the beach break at our Guiones resort. The biggest difference will be the waves breaking in virtually the same place, with similar characteristics each time. This coaching course will only be open to level 3 and 4 surfers as the focus will be on performing manoeuvres on the wave face given the conditions we expect to have at that time of year.

We will be staying in three simple, traditional, Indonesian style studio bungalows. With a wooden floor and walls, a thatched roof and no AC or Wifi. Just a fan, a bed, a mosquito net and the best view you could ever want to wake up to: Pitstops, a fun and consistent right-hander a stone’s throw from your bed (image above and below). It is also optimal from a surfing point of view with another 16 surf spots accessible by our boat each day.
The cost of the ten days will be $5280, which, like all Surf Simply coaching courses, includes everything apart from your flights..
The trip begins when we meet you in Padang, Sumatra on September 12th, 2016. We will pick you up from the airport, or your hotel, by 10am and from that moment on we will take care of all your logistics and expenses so you can just enjoy surfing and being coached.
On the final day of the trip, September 22nd, we drop you off back at your hotel in Padang, or the airport. You can scroll down to check out our advice, and links, for travelling to, and from Padang.

There will be just 6 surfer spots available for our 2016 Indonesian satellite coaching project, with two surfers in each of the three, studio bungalows. Based on our previous satellite coaching projects, the spaces will probably fill up quickly, so get in touch sooner rather than later if you’re interested.

Traveling To/From Padang
You will need to arrange your own flights to Padang in Sumatra, Indonesia. Once you land in Padang, we will be there to pick you up from the airport, or your hotel if you arrived the night before.
There are several options for getting to Padang, however we recommend you get an international flight into Kuala Lumpur (KUL), and then an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Padang (PDG).
Many airlines have international routes into Kuala Lumpur (KUL). We recommend that you choose the best flight for you that arrives in Kuala Lumpur on the evening of September 11, and then spend the night at Sama Sama Hotel ( which is in Kuala Lumpur airport) before flying to Padang the next day.
The following morning (Monday, Sep 12th), there is a 7:50am Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Padang (PDG). It is a short (approximately one hour) flight that will have you arriving at 8am local time in Padang.
We will meet you in Padang where we will take a boat out to the Mentawai Islands, which takes about five hours.
If you arrive in Padang via a different route, that’s fine but you need to be in Padang before 9am on the morning of September 12th, 2016.
If you decide to come into Padang on September 11, then we recommend staying at The Mecure Hotel in Padang.
On the return journey, your speedboat will be arrive back at in Padang around 11:30am on September 22nd. We will then take you to your hotel in Padang (we suggest The Mecure) or to the airport (PDG).
